The race of Raisina Hill is all set to begin as President Pranab Mukherjee will exit from Rashtrapati Bhavan on next month.
Recently the Chief Election Commissioner of India Nasim Zaidi announced the schedule of President election.

3. President of India election, scrutiny of nominations : 29 June 2017

Election Process:
The president is elected by an electoral college consisting of the elected members of both houses of Parliament, the elected members of the Legislative Assemblies of the 29 states and the elected members of Legislative Assemblies of Union territories of Delhi and Pundichery .
As of 2017 , the electoral college comprises 776 MPs and 4120 MLAs . The total strength of electoral college is 10,98,882 votes. Half way mark is 5,49,442 votes.

The President of India is the head of the state and first citizen of India . The President is also the Commander-in-chief of the Indian Armed Forces.
The primary duty of the President is to preserve , protect and defend the Constitution and the Law of India.

After State Assembly elections and by polls of 2017, the strength of National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has increased. They are just short of 20,000 electoral votes to win the President election. Combine strength of all the opposition parties is slightly more than NDA .
"Can all opposition unite for President election? " is a big question
Parties on either side of the political spectrum have started the scramble to build consensus among their supporters for consensus candidate . While the ruling NDA is in huddle to find a candidate acceptable to all its constituent, the Congress party is trying to stitch a broad anti-BJP Alliance. Congress President Sonia Gandhi has been meeting opposition leaders to find a candidate who has acceptability across all political parties ideologically oppose to the right .

Draupadi Muramu :
BJP can field Jharkhand Governor Draupadi Muramu as NDAs candidate . She came from backward community.
Mohan Bhagwat:
Shiv Sena , the alliance partner of BJP has openly supported the RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat for Presidential election , but both BJP and Bhagwat denied this .
Sushma Swaraj :
There are reports that Sushma Swaraj might be NDAs candidate . Due to her health problem she may be elevated for the post of President .
Lalkrishna Adavani and Murali Manohar Joshi :
The names of senior BJP leaders Lalkrishna Advani and Murali Manohar Joshi are also debated in the race.However due to Court orders their chances have become very slim.
Gopal Krishna Gandhi :
Gopal Krishna Gandhi, a grandson of Mahatma Gandhi is a renowned diplomat and former Governor of West Bengal. According to reports, Sonia Gandhi spoke to him regarding his candidacy.
Sharad Yadav And Sharad Pawar
The names of senior Janta Dal leader Sharad Yadav and NCP suprimo Sharad Pawar have also come up in the discussion.However Sharad Pawar denied about his candidature.
Pranab Mukherjee :
President Pranab Mukherjee could get a second term as he enjoys an all party support.
BJP took lead in campaign :
BJP President Amit Shah has postponed his visit to Arunachal Pradesh due to start on 12 June 2017 and the party is likely to defer its national executive meeting scheduled for July 15-16 as it works to finalize a candidate for the Presidential election.
BJP chief formed a three member panel of senior ministers to start consulting allies on the next President.Union Ministers Rajanath Singh, Arun Jetly And Venkaiah Naidu are in the committee tasked with building consensus around the BJP led NDA candidate.
Opposition parties are to have there own meeting on 14 June 2017 to discuss their candidate.
The picture will be clear in the next week.
But it seems that, BJP is clear -It has enough numbers to have the final word on the next President.
