The battle for Presidential election of India is now heat up. By declaring the name of Shri Ramnath Kovind as a presidential candidate of NDA they took a lead in election campaign. While briefing to media the BJP president Amit Shah stongly highlighted that they are offering of Dalit candidate for Presidential election.The selection of a Dalit leader for President is seen a move by the BJP to consolidate its growing support among backward castes and poorer voters.
The Opposition has decided to field former Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar against NDA candidate Ram Nath Kovind in the July 17 presidential election. Seventeen Opposition parties met at the Parliament library on Thursday to deliberate on a consensus candidate and have unanimously picked Meira Kumar as their nominee. As expected, the Opposition has turned the presidential election into a Dalit to Dalit.
Ramnath Kovind
Kovind was born on 1 october 1945 in Kanpur Dehat district, Uttar Pradesh. Kovind holds a Bachelors degree in commerce and a LLB from Kanpur University.After graduating in law , Kovind went to Delhi to prepare for the civil services examination. He passed this exam on his third attempt, but he did not join it but started practicing the law. He was Central Government Advocate in the Delhi High Court from 1977 to 1979 and served as a Central Government standing counsel in the Supreme Court from 1980 to 1993. He practiced in the Delhi High Court and Supreme Court for about 16 years until 1993. As an advocate he provided free legal aid to weaker sections of society, women and the poor under the Free Legal Aid Society in New Delhi. He also served as the personal assistant of Prime Minister of India Morarji Desai in 1977-1978.
He joined the BJP in 1991. He was President of the BJP Dalit Morcha between 1998 and 2002 and President of the All-India Koli Samaj. He also served as national spokesperson of the party. He donated his ancestral home in Derapur to the RSS. He contested from Ghatampur and Bhognipur (both in Uttar Pradesh) assembly constituencies on the BJP ticket but lost both elections.
He was elected and became a Rajya Sabha MP from the state of Uttar Pradesh in April 1994. He served a total of twelve years, two consecutive terms, until March 2006.On 8 August 2015, the President of India appointed Kovind as Governor of Bihar.After nomination for the post of President of India, he resigned from his post as Governor of Bihar,.
Meera Kumar
Mrs. Meera Kumar is prominent leaders of the Indian National Congress . She represent the Sasaram Lok Sabha constituency of Bihar in the fifteenth Lok Sabha . She was elected unopposed on June 3, 2009 as the first woman speaker of Lok Sabha.Meera Kumari is from the Dalit community and she is the daughter of former Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Jagjivan Ram .
Mira Kumari joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1973.In 1985, she came first to choose Bijnor from Parliament. In 1990, she was elected a member of the Executive Committee of Congress Party and General Secretary of All India Congress Committee. In 1996, she became a Member of Parliament for the second time and started the third innings in 1998, winning the Lok Sabha seat from Sasaram of Bihar in 2004.In 2004, she was made a Minister in the Ministry of Social Justice in the United Progressive Alliance Government.This time she has been elected to Parliament for the fifth time.

first count as above, candidate after candidate was excluded till only two

Electoral Votes
In the present situation the electoral votes of NDA and UPA are as shown in the following table. Total electoral votes of NDA is 527,371 with percentage of 48.10. Others Parties have 133,907 electoral votes ( 12.20%). These other parties already extend their support to Shri Ramanath Kovind . Total 60.30% elecroral votes are behind NDAs candidate.The balance is clearly tilted towards Shri Ramnath Kovind to be the next President Of India.
